Dementia Friends

"The small gestures can mean so much to our fellow residents with dementia, just being a friendly face."

At our resident workshop on feeling safe last year, some residents were talking about living alongside and being kind and caring towards others who have dementia. They let us know they were interested in learning more about it, since they did not want to say or do anything which may distress a fellow resident.

This week residents came together with our brilliant Dementia Champions - Win, Ruth and Donna - who gave a short presentation alongside a video of people’s experiences of dementia. There was the opportunity for residents to ask questions and find out more - and there was lots of input, including from a resident who had experience of looking after her husband.
The session was very well received, and residents left feeling more informed and confident about the topic.
Corton House also has a small dementia resource library with a selection of books recommended by The Reading Agency's Reading Well for Dementia list. Books are freely available for residents, their family and friends, and staff to borrow.
